As I follow the connection between Christ’s presence and receiving the Spirit, another question becomes important: what is being communicated, and where does it come from?
In John 14–16, Jesus repeatedly draws attention to the source of His words. Hearing, receiving, and living according to those words belong together.
The Father as the Source
In John 14:10, 24, Jesus explains that He does not speak from Himself. He identifies the word being heard as belonging to the Father who sent Him.
I want to keep that relationship visible.
Jesus speaks, while directing attention to the Father as the source. Representing the Father does not make the distinction between the One sending and the One sent unimportant.
This matters throughout my study of God’s image. I am examining how God is made known through the one representing Him.
Teaching and Remembrance
In John 14:26, Jesus says the Father will send the Holy Spirit in His name. The Spirit will teach and bring to remembrance what Jesus has said.
Then, in John 15:26, Jesus describes sending the Spirit of truth from the Father, bearing witness concerning Him.
The message remains connected with its source.
In John 16:13–15, the Spirit speaks what is heard and declares what is received from Jesus. Jesus then explains that everything the Father has belongs to Him.
These details help me follow the relationships without overlooking who sends, who receives, and what is communicated.
A Relationship That Reaches Into Conduct
Within this same discussion, Jesus connects loving Him with keeping His word.
In John 14:23, He speaks of the Father and Himself coming and making their dwelling with the person who loves Him and keeps His word.
The dwelling and the response belong in the same examination.
For me, receiving the Spirit cannot be separated from a willingness to listen, be corrected, and live according to what God gives. A claim of spiritual understanding does not remove that responsibility.
Remaining and Bearing Fruit
John 15:4–12 continues with abiding and fruit.
Jesus distinguishes the vine from the branches while describing their relationship. The branches depend upon abiding in the vine to bear fruit.
He then connects abiding with love and keeping His commandments, and commands the disciples to love one another as He has loved them.
This is where the study becomes personal.
How do I respond when someone needs care? How do I treat someone who disagrees with me? Am I willing to listen without making agreement a condition of kindness?
These are questions I bring to my own conduct. Understanding must reach further than words I can explain.
In my study of God’s image, receiving the Spirit and living in love remain connected. The source of the life matters—and so does the fruit expressed through it.
