Browse at Your Own Pace

Begin wherever your curiosity leads. The studies will be here when you’re ready. When I shared my first Matthew study on Facebook today, I mentioned that I planned to post daily, though I might not share every post on Facebook. As I continue setting up this blog, I’ve realized that what matters most to me is making my past studies available for anyone who wants to explore them. For now, I’ll be adding posts to my heart’s content as I work through those studies. Some days that may mean one post; other days it may mean several. I’ll continue reading through and preparing each one before sharing it. There is no need to keep up with everything as it appears. This blog is becoming a place you can browse at your own pace—begin with a book, a question, or a study that interests you, and follow from there. The Bible Books page gathers studies by book, while Study Threads helps connect topics that travel through more than one book. The labels on individual posts also bring related material to...

7. The Ark Is Taken — What Happens to Glory?

Inside the Mind — Where the Word Leads
God’s Image Study | Study: Bridegroom and Bride

The ark brings several threads together: covenant, testimony, covering, voice, and Glory. Its capture also places a wife, a birth, and a child’s name within the account.

To follow these connections, we must begin before the battle.

The place of meeting and speaking

The testimony is placed inside the ark. Above it is the mercy seat, overshadowed by two cherubim. YHWH (יהוה) appoints this as the place of meeting and speaking to Moses. Exodus 25:16–22

The vessel bears the testimony; the words come from God. This relationship gives us something to examine whenever people claim authority through possession of sacred things.

What happens before the capture?

Eli’s sons abuse the offerings and refuse their father’s warning. Eli is confronted for honoring his sons above YHWH (יהוה). Their deaths are foretold, while a faithful priest is promised. 1 Samuel 2:12–35

Meanwhile, Samuel learns to recognize the calling voice. Before the lamp goes out, he hears his name. By morning, he opens the doors, afraid to deliver the judgment concerning Eli’s house. 1 Samuel 3

The sequence already includes hearing, recognition, light, doors, and a word that must be delivered.

Carrying the ark into battle

After defeat, Israel brings the ark from Shiloh, expecting rescue. A great shout follows its arrival. Yet defeat follows again: the ark is captured, and Eli’s sons die. 1 Samuel 4:1–11

The account invites us to distinguish confidence in possessing the covenant’s vessel from faithfulness to the covenant’s words.

A wife hears; a child is named

Eli hears the news and dies after falling beside the gate. Phinehas’s pregnant wife hears, gives birth, and dies. She names her son Ichabod, declaring that Glory has departed because the ark was taken. 1 Samuel 4:12–22

Wife, mother, son, hearing, death, birth, and naming belong to the same unfolding scene. We can preserve these details for comparison without deciding their final meaning prematurely.

What happens among the captors?

Dagon falls before the ark. His head and hands are subsequently severed at the threshold. Affliction spreads, and the Philistines eventually seek to return the ark. Their advisers tell them to give Glory to Israel’s God and warn against hardening their hearts like Pharaoh. 1 Samuel 5–6

The captors possess the ark, but possession gives them no mastery over God.

Glory departs from Israel; divine power remains active among the captors. Departure does not mean death.

This becomes a further question for our Bridegroom and Bride study: what establishes a faithful relationship to the source—possession, a claimed identity, or hearing and answering the words received?
