Browse at Your Own Pace

Begin wherever your curiosity leads. The studies will be here when you’re ready. When I shared my first Matthew study on Facebook today, I mentioned that I planned to post daily, though I might not share every post on Facebook. As I continue setting up this blog, I’ve realized that what matters most to me is making my past studies available for anyone who wants to explore them. For now, I’ll be adding posts to my heart’s content as I work through those studies. Some days that may mean one post; other days it may mean several. I’ll continue reading through and preparing each one before sharing it. There is no need to keep up with everything as it appears. This blog is becoming a place you can browse at your own pace—begin with a book, a question, or a study that interests you, and follow from there. The Bible Books page gathers studies by book, while Study Threads helps connect topics that travel through more than one book. The labels on individual posts also bring related material to...

86. Ten Commandments: Receiving the Bread of Life

God’s Image Study • Commandment 7: You Shall Not Commit Adultery

Our examination of bread, clothing, and a name brings us to another question: What are we receiving as nourishment, and where does it lead us?

As we study spiritual faithfulness, the invitations we accept matter. Scripture connects receiving provision with listening, coming, believing, and life.

An Invitation to Hear and Live

Isaiah 55 opens with an invitation to receive without money. It questions spending resources on what does not nourish or satisfy, then connects eating what is good with listening attentively.

The invitation continues:

“Incline your ear, and come unto me; hear, and your soul shall live”

— Isaiah 55:3, ASV, excerpt

Hearing and life appear together. Later, the passage calls for returning to YHWH (יהוה), forsaking wicked ways and unrighteous thoughts. Receiving His provision includes a willingness to leave what conflicts with His instruction. Read Isaiah 55:1–7.

The Father Gives the Bread

In John 6, Jesus directs attention from perishable food toward food enduring to eternal life. The Father has set His seal upon the Son of Man.

Jesus identifies the Father as the giver of the true bread from heaven and identifies himself as the bread of life. He came to accomplish the will of the One who sent him. Read John 6:27–38.

The relationship remains clear: the Father gives and sends; Jesus comes and accomplishes the Father’s will.

Jesus also explains that the Father draws people to him. Hearing and learning from the Father lead to the Son. Read John 6:44–45.

The Spirit Gives Life

Jesus states:

“The Spirit is the One who gives life”

— John 6:63, LSB, excerpt

He connects his words with spirit and life. Yet some disciples withdraw. Peter remains, recognizing that Jesus has the words of eternal life. Read John 6:60–69.

What Am I Willing to Receive?

This brings our study back to allegiance. Am I willing to receive instruction when it challenges what I prefer? Do I seek understanding, or search only for reassurance that my existing beliefs are correct?

These questions belong to each of us. We can examine what we have accepted, return to the passages, and remain willing to be corrected.

Faithfulness requires attention to the One we claim to follow. The name we carry should lead us to examine the instruction we receive and the choices we make.

Threads to Follow

  • Clothing and readiness: Follow the connection between cleansing, clothing, and the Bride’s preparation.

  • Remaining joined: Keep receiving and abiding alongside our examination of union in 1 Corinthians 6:16–17.

  • Babylon: After completing this commandment, examine her invitations and the call to come out of her.
